Economics In Marketing Topic:

As per the guidelines for Economics in Marketing, the competitor will prepare their essay in advance of the State Career Development Conference. The 2010 topic is:

The Federal Reserve is likely to soon pass new rules making it harder for banks to hit customers with fees for overdrawing their accounts. Banks have been criticized for padding their profits with fees from customers who overdraw their accounts while pushing consumers deeper into debt. If fees help banks improve their financial health but weaken consumers' financial health, is this good or bad for the economy?

Should banks back off on overdraft fees? What benefit do these fees provide customers? Who is the target market for this type of service? How much price elasticity is there? Should or can banks use lower overdraft fees as a unique selling position and is that ethical? What are the long run and short run implicit and explicit costs associated with banks lowering overdraft fees? Should banks give customers the ability to opt out an overdraft protection program if they don't want It.? How do reducing overdraft fees impact the customer who never needs this service? How might banks offset this profit reduction? Should banks be continuously blamed for everything that is wrong with our economy?
